Dog Gives Birth To Rare Puppy With Green Fur In Canada

Freya had a litter of eight with one of the newborn pups coming out the unusual color.

Trevor and Audra Mosher, owners of dog Freya, immediately feared the worst for her new pup after believing that its unusual colour meant she had been stillborn.

But to their huge surprise the tiny female puppy — part of a litter of eight born in Canada — began moving almost immediately, and has been thriving ever since.

She has begun life without any significant health problems, with her green tinge being put down to an unusual process in the womb.

She had been born surrounded a black sac unlike all her siblings, who were all found inside translucent ones.

The rare discolouration of her fur is thought to come from a green pigment found in the bile inside the sac.

The rare phenomenon is thought to happen when light-colored puppies come in contact with biliverdin, a green pigment found in bile.

It's the same pigment that makes bruises turn green. It essentially dyes their fur in the womb, and the color fades over time.
