6ft Halibut Weighing 12 Stone Caught In North Sea

A fishmonger was left stunned after he took delivery of a giant-sized 6ft halibut that tipped the scales at 12-stone.

Buyer Campbell Mickel, 50, said it has now been filleted and sold to local restaurants, with the cheeks going home with him and wife Giselle, 37.

The 168lbs halibut was caught in the North Sea before being taken to Peterhead, where Campbell bought it last week.

It landed at his fishmongers, Eddie’s Seafood Market in Edinburgh, at the weekend, with worker William Elliot posing next to it.

Campbell said: “It’s a beast and it wasn’t cheap that’s for sure.

"It was wrapped up after I bought it and shipped to me on two pallets.

"The hardest part was getting it into the shop window.

“It took four men to get it up there. It’s not the easiest job lifting the dead weight of a 77kg slimy fish. It dwarfed the other halibut next to it.”

Campbell was a chef in the ’80s where huge halibut were common.

"But he said this was the biggest since he became a fishmonger a year ago.

He added: “It’s amazing there is still that size of halibut in the sea.
