Chinese Woman's 12.40cm Eyelashes Is The Longest Of The World

Shanghai-born You Jianxia has a profusion of long and luxurious eyelashes, the lengthiest of which grows on her left upper lid and reaches a record-breaking 12.40 cm (4.88 inches).

It was measured in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, in June 2016 and has earned her a coveted place in the new Guinness World Records 2018 book for the Longest eyelash, alongside other iconic human body records such as the Longest fingernails on a pair of hands (female) and Tallest high top fade.

This beat the previous longest eyelash, which grew on the left upper lid of Canada’s Gillian Criminisi and measured 8.07 cm (3.17 in) long.

You Jianxia first noticed her eyelashes growing during an eighteen month nature retreat that she embarked on back in 2013, and she puts the unprecedented growth down to living at one with nature.

The spiritual record-breaker says that having long eyelashes is beautiful as it shows she is healthy.

Ms.You doesn't have any special techniques for looking after her luscious lashes, she simply cleans them when she washes her face each day.

Asked whether they ever cause her any discomfort, she said: In order to set this record, the challenger's eyelash must be completely natural – no extensions may be used.

For the official attempt, You’s eyelash was laid flat on a ruler and measured three times in the presence of independent witnesses.

The loss of eyelashes can indicate medical problems, but unusual and abnormal growth (as in Jianxia’s case) can also signify health problems.

The excessive growth of lashes is called eyelash trichomegaly. Unusually long, dense lashes can be uncomfortable and affect your vision.

According to Hypertrichosis, trichomegaly may occur in people who have lupus or are being treated for leukaemia and Aids, and is usually a side-effect of medication.
