A man who was caught with a kilogram of gold bars stuffed up his bottom had hidden the loot in his own body to avoid paying an 18% tax on them.
The Indian man, who has not been named, was travelling on a GoAir flight from Dubai into Kerala’s busy Kannur airport.
Airport staff spotted him walking through the airport awkwardly and was stopped and checked by officials from the Air Intelligence Unit.
He was taken to an assessment area of the travel hub and was searched by staff who discovered a large amount of gold in his bottom.
Staff weighed the gold and found almost a kilogram of the metal, equivalent to 1470gm in compound form.
Posting to Facebook, the AIU said: “AIU Kannur seized 1470gm gold in compound form (1316gm extracted) from a passenger who arrived from Dubai by flight G8 4013.
The AIU also shared images of the gold on Facebook, which appeared to have been melted into 7 and a quarter pieces.
It is the latest in a number of seizures of gold being smuggled into India from Arabic states.
Officials have said hiding the metal in the body is rare, and most people try and bring the gold in other objects.
Gold has been found in chocolate boxes, purses, umbrellas, pens and toothpaste.
One person had even lined their underwear with the precious metal.
