'Underwater Post Office' Lets Visitors Send Letters While Swimming In The Sea In Vanuatu

In Vanuatu, visitors can send an extra dose of travel envy - with a letter sent via the island's quirky underwater post office!

Snorkellers and divers can swim over to the fully submerged post office, which sits at a depth of three metres, and deliver their messages on special waterproof letters.

Of course usual stamps and ink don't exactly thrive in ocean waters, so the letters are embossed with your message and the 'stamp'.

The cards are collected regularly by one of Vanuatu Post’s four trained scuba divers and 'cancelled' underwater with an embossing cachet.

They will then be taken along to the mainland post and sent on to their final destination.

The post office does have opening hours; usually the underwater branch is manned daily for about an hour. If you visit when it's unmanned, there is a handy little postbox where you can leave your letters too.

For those who don't want to dive down, there are locals on hand who will deliver the letter for you.

The underwater post office isn't new. It first opened its doors in 2003, and it's estimated to have welcomed around 100,000 visitors since.
