The woman from Taiwan showed the snaps to her family prompting her cousin to upload them to social media where the images quickly went viral.
But rather than being a disgusting digit, the object was revealed to be fish maw – also known as the swim bladder or gas bladder – the organ that helps bony fish control their buoyancy in the water.
Yet with the organ having been tossed into the pot to boil with the other ingredients, the woman felt sure she had just scooped up a human finger.
The fish maw appears to be the same length and width as a severed finger and even has a bony part that resembles a fingernail.
The shrivelled organ also has wrinkly skin making it look like an elderly finger.
The woman joked to her family: “Look, my mum put her heart and soul and finger into this soup.”
The vomit-inducing pictures were shared widely on social media and the majority of users were convinced that the object was in fact a severed digit.
