First-time Alligator Hunter caught a Giant 13ft and 604lbs Gator on Ashley river - Summerville

Here is the terrifying 13ft river monster that decided to join a family on a day out on the river.

The group from South Carolina hauled in the enormous reptile while they were out hunting - for alligators .

It was the family's first time trying their hand at the perilous pastime popular in the southeastern U.S states.

Hunter Mike Montei told local TV station WCIV: "That wasn't what we were looking for but that's what it ended up being.

"I’ve never been lucky like that."

Even for those seasoned in such a dangerous hobby, the size of the ferocious creature was a shock.

Weighing a jaw-dropping 604 pounds, the beast is more than three times heavier than the average man.

Mike had been joined on the Ashley River, South Carolina, by his daughter Sarah and nephew Matt McCarty when they made the catch.

And it is thought the animal was once even bigger.

Local taxidermist Kenneth Cordray, who received the alligator for harvesting, said it could have once exceeded 14ft.

He told the station: "Wow, look at the tail on him. He's huge."

"He's missing part of his tail as well so he's well over 13' 4". If he had that whole tail he'd be close to 14."

"It was a lot of fun though and I think if we had another chance to do it we probably would," Sarah Montei said. "but we definitely wouldn't be shooting for another 13 footer."

Alligator hunting is legal in a selection of US states, including South Carolina, Florida and Alabama.
