The fisherman who named as Pardin, 21, rescued the "angel" from the water and took it home, where his mum cared for it like a real human.
She dressed it in fresh clothes every day in a different blouse and hijab and left it sitting in a chair like a human.
Word spread in the small village on Banggai island off central Sulawesi with embellishments added to the story too, such as that the ‘angel child’ was found stranded and crying, according to local media.
When police got wind of the idea an angel was taking up residence in their village, they went to check it out – and promptly confirmed it was in fact a sex doll.
"So it was checked by one of our team. It was a sex toy," said the area's police chief Heru Pramukarno.
He added that they took the doll away to prevent any political controversy.
It is thought Pardin believed the doll was an angel as he found it days after the solar eclipse.
Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country and many people believe solar eclipses, like the one which occurred there on March 12, are spiritual.
