A doting father from Chongqing, southwest China, has finally shared a smile with his daughter who has been lying in a coma for almost 10 years.
33-year-old Yang Fengxia, suffered from an intracranial haemorrhage (bleeding inside the skull) in an accident 2006. She lost consciousness and slipped into a coma soon after, reports The People’s Daily Online.
On November 4, at the Xinqiao Hospital in the neurosurgery EEG examination room, Yang regained part of her consciousness, which doctors said had much to do with her parent’s constant care.
When she came round from her vegetative state, her 66-year-old father Yang Daguo said she smiles and laughs when she hears the words ‘coffee’ and ‘hotpot’ (a traditional Chinese meal).
After the accident, Yang had 18 months of treatment at the hospital, then her parents took her home to take care of her.
Yang’s mother sadly passed away from a diabetes related problem in 2012, since then her father has been her sole carer.
Last year, his own health deteriorated when he fell ill with stomach polyps and needed to be operated on. Throughout his poor health, he never gave up on his daughter.
In order to help save her, Mr Yang has spent all of his life savings on caring for her and is now heavily in debt. He also borrowed a lot of money from relatives and friends who he has been unable to pay back.
He wakes up every day at 5 am to help her with rehabilitation training, pulling her hands up so she can do sit-ups, and carrying her around in a homemade sling for some constant movement.
Sadly, doctors said Yang’s brain is still severely damaged, and it will take a lot more rehabilitation for her to fully recover.
This does not putt off her father who will continue to care for her for as long as he can.
