CCTV Boy Thrown into air by Sewer Blast after lighting a firecracker over a manhole

A nine-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after a sewer explosion left him with a serious head injury and broken bones.

The blast occurred when the boy and his friends were playing with firecrackers in the city of Hohhot in northern China's autonomous region of Inner Mongolia.

Video footage shows him crouching down over a manhole with a lighter to ignite the firecracker when the explosion suddenly happens.

He is hurled into the air and then falls back to earth, hitting the back of a nearby car.

A resident living nearby said: "I thought I heard a flat tyre, but there was smoke and it looked like something was thrown into the air. It turned out to be a boy.

"We immediately called emergency services. I went to grab something to wrap him up and minutes later the ambulance arrived."

It is believed the blast was caused by a build up of highly-explosive biogas from septic tanks that are housed inside the sewer.
