A businessman foiled an armed robbery with the help of his security bodyguard - by throwing fistfuls of cash on the pavement and shooting the gunmen as they crouched down to pick up the money.
The three hooded raiders held the pair up as they entered a bank in Trujillo, Peru to deposit savings.
But they hadn’t reckoned with their intended victim’s novel way of distracting their attention.
The bodyguard was first to shoot, hitting one of the robbers as he tried to make his getaway with an armful of cash.
The thief was arrested after being admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest. He had part of the booty from his raid on him.
An accomplice, named last night as 22-year-old Miguel Alonso Ruiz, was shot dead just round the corner from the bank.
A lorry driver, who was eating lunch in his cab, was also injured after being caught in the crossfire.
Police were still hunting the third robber last night.
CCTV cameras captured the amazing scenes, from the moment the three gunmen followed the unnamed businessman and his security guard into the bank to the point at which they had to run for their lives after being caught out as they tried to scoop up money from the pavement.
The footage also showed Good Samaritans helping the bodyguard collect up some of the banknotes the criminals had been after, but had left behind in their hurry to flee the scene.
Police said they had identified the armed robbers as members of a gang called ‘Los Sanguinarios de El Porvenir’, - English for the ‘ Bloodthirsty Ones of El Porvenir’, a town near the coastal city of Trujillo in northwestern Peru.
Police revealed earlier this year there had been 72 murders in Trujillo, which is also the name of the province, between January and March.
Ninety per cent of the killings were the results of feuds between rival drugs gangs.
In the first five months of this year in El Porvenir, one of the most dangerous in Trujillo province, 25 people were murdered.
Locals in the town, which has a population of 200,000, have been calling for more police patrols.
Currently, there is only one police officer per 2,217 inhabitants.
