Chinese grandfather builds a 12 metre long AIRCRAFT CARRIER for his grandson… complete with fighter jets to launch

A Chinese grandfather surprised his grandson with the ultimate toy boat... a 12-metre long aircraft carrier, capable of carrying 20 people.

Delighted Guo Fu, 12, is even able to display model military jets on it - all created by 80-year-old grandfather Wen Yuzhu.

They gave the ship its maiden voyage on the coast of the city of Qingdao in eastern China's Shandong province, providing a popular attraction for locals.

The idea for the ship came after Wen Yuzhu took his grandson to a local park so that he could fly his model plane.

The schoolboy joked that his grandfather, a keen sailor, should make him an aircraft carrier so that he could show off the plane.

Instead of laughing off his suggestion the grandfather got a group of friends together and a month later he had built a scale model of the aircraft carrier.

At a scale of 1:25, the model comfortably fits the schoolboy's model planes.

The aircraft carrier is twelve metres long and two metres wide, and can comfortably fit many people.

Final preparations on the craft meant it was on land for around a month ahead of its first ever voyage.

Although Wen Yuzhu built a scale model of a plane to fit on top of the aircraft carrier, there was no room on the maiden voyage for any model planes.

This was because the first voyage instead took 20 people on board, who took a trip into the waters of the coast.

Mr Yuzhu said: 'I have often made smaller vessels for my own pleasure as I like boat building as a hobby, and what I like about this project is that not many people round here have ever seen a real aircraft carrier.

'This is not the real thing but it is the next best thing and I think it has made a lot of people happy, not just my grandson.'
