Secret TUNNELS of El Chapo Guzman's used to escape with his beauty queen WIFE from police before arrest

The video show a stairway leading from a safe house to a tunnel that connects to the drainage system in the city of Culiacan, the same that Joaquin El Chapo Guzman aroused last week to escape from a four-day long operation.

Mexican authorities captured El Chapo on Saturday after a massive search through his home state.

El Chapo's global organisation is the leading supplier of cocaine to the US.

He eluded Mexican authorities for 13 years and he was arrested along with a man identified as Carlos Manuel Hoo Ramirez.

US authorities announced plans to seek the extradition of Mexico's most powerful drug lord after his capture in a US-backed operation that included a drone, cellphone intercepts and elite Mexican marines.

As prosecutors in New York prepared their request, new details emerged Sunday from the manhunt that led to the capture of El Chapo, whose empire has smuggled drugs to the US, Europe and Asia.

The US surveillance drone was used for two weeks between mid-January and mid-February to back up a massive operation in the northwestern city of Culiacan, a US government official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

El Chapo eventually slipped out of Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, after escaping through tunnels under one of his safe houses as the marines closed in on him, Mexican and US officials said.

Under pressure, the 56-year-old drug capo, who had been on the run since escaping from prison 13 years ago, fled further south to the beach resort city of Mazatlan.

It was there that the elite marine unit captured him on Saturday, in the fourth floor of a condominium, with a surprisingly small entourage that included one lookout, one bodyguard and a woman believed to be his beauty-queen wife, the US official said.

Emma Coronel is either Guzman's third or fourth wife and they were married in 2011 when she was just 18-years-old. She caught his eye after winning the Miss Coffee and Guava beauty contest.

Coronel, who is the daughter of one of Guzman's top deputies, Ines Coronel Barreas, had last been seen re-entering Mexico in August 2011.

The then 22-year-old had just given birth to Guzman's twin daughters at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, California.

Because Coronel is both an American and Mexican citizen - she is allowed to travel freely between the two countries.

The United States had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture, with several indictments in multiple cities from New York to San Diego.

El Chapo is also facing new charges of drug trafficking, using illegal funds, organized crime and possession of weapons reserved for the military, the official said.

The captured kingpin is not facing murder charges, the official said.
