Most Wanted Drug Lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Captured in Mazatlán - Mexico

The Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, head fo the Sinaloa cartel, was arrested on Saturday February 22nd at 6 am, inside a resort in the port of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. 

His capture was the result of an operation coordinated by Mexican and U.S. authorities, as it was informed this morning by The Associated Press.


A senior U.S. official said Guzman was captured alive in the city of Mazatlán, a tourist destination on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The official, who was not authorized to speak about the arrest, gave information on condition of anonymity.


Guzman faces multiple federal drug charges in the United States and for more than a decade, he has been on the top ten list of the most wanted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).



His drug empire stretches throughout North America, but also reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. Forbes Magazine published back in 2010, that his fortune was worth 1 Billion USD.
The Sinaloa Cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has plagued parts of Mexico for several years.
