CCTV : Quick-thinking forklift truck driver blocks burglars' exit by reversing into getaway car

This is the moment two raiders trying to steal thousands of pounds’ worth of boilers were foiled by a fearless forklift driver.

Mark Church blocked the getaway car containing burglars David Redshaw and Edward Barclay as they tried to flee with £2,400 worth of central heating boilers.

The men had driven into the MKM Builders Merchants depot in Stockton on March 15 and started loading the boilers into the back of Barclay’s van.

But when disturbed by the warehouseman, they tried to make off in the vehicle, the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette reports.

Quick-thinking Mark, from Thornaby, sprinted towards a parked forklift truck and reversed into the van as it raced towards the exit.

During their sentencing at Teesside Crown Court, prosecutor Christopher Attwooll, said: “They made off on foot but police were quickly on the scene and within minutes found the men on Boeing Way.”

Barclay, 23, of Ruskin Grove in Hartlepool, had pleaded guilty to the burglary at an earlier hearing.

He received a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years.

Redshaw, 42, of Flotilla House, Hartlepool, was found guilty by a jury at an earlier trial.

He was also sentenced for a separate burglary committed against an 81-year-old widow in Stillington, while on bail for the March offence.

The court heard how he and his brother, 42-year-old Gary Young, of Hartlepool, carried out the distraction burglary at her home on May 17.

One entered the house and stole her purse while the other carried out work outside.

The pair were also charged with fraud after using the woman’s cards to withdrew cash and buy goods including flatscreen televisions.

Redshaw, who has 61 previous convictions dating back to 1985, pleaded guilty to the domestic burglary and fraud offences.

The court heard his lengthy record did not include “recent or relevant” convictions for house burglary.

Judge Peter Armstrong told him: “You took advantage of this elderly lady by stealing her purse and cards and went on to use them to obtain cash and goods”, and handed him a four and a half year jail sentence.

Young, who also pleaded guilty to the offences, had convictions dating back to 1987 including the burglary of an 84-year-old woman from Peterlee in 2005.

He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
