CCTV : 88 y.o man stumbles on to rail tracks in front of train…which stops just inches away from him

This is the heart-stopping moment a pensioner collapses onto railway tracks into the path of an oncoming train which incredibly manages to stop just inches away from his head.

Dramatic footage shows the 88-year-old man stumbling over the edge of the platform and landing in the middle of the tracks as the train comes into the station.

But the driver slams on the emergency brakes just in time and the train screeches to a halt without hitting him.

The incident happened at Boronia station in Melbourne, Australia, on November 5, but CCTV footage has now been made public.

Police believe the Ferntree Gully man, who has not been named, may have fainted before plunging off the platform.

At the time, Boronia Senior Sergeant Wayne Fielding told the Herald Sun: 'A very quick response by the train driver has averted tragedy.

'Another couple of inches and it would have been a (coroner's) inquest... it was a very, very close shave.'

The driver reportedly needed counselling to help with cope with the trauma.

The man suffered minor leg injuries and remains in a stable condition in hospital.
