Footage shows a young man grinning at the camera before running up to the living statue and shoving him off his podium.
The performer is thrown a few feet forward and lands on a little girl, almost stabbing her with the spiked axe he is holding.
Onlookers scream in shock as the man runs off laughing at the camera.
The incident happened outside the Bullring shopping center in New Street, Birmingham, on Sunday.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police told Sky News: "We are trying to identify the street performer and the little girl and her parents as neither have made contact with the police.
"Bullring security is aware of the incident as are the local neighbourhood policing team in case they come across the street performer or the offender."
Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police on 101.
