Russia : Plane catches fire landing at Moscow Vnukovo Airport

An airport in the Russian capital Moscow has been closed temporarily after a plane carrying some 140 passengers and crew caught fire upon landing, law enforcement officials say.

According to a statement released by an unnamed law enforcement official, the incident happened at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport Saturday morning as the Boeing 737 operated by the U-Tair Airlines was heading to the capital from the southern city of Stavropol.



The official said that the airport was shut at 7:48 a.m. local time and was reopened at about 10:00 a.m. after the aircraft had been removed from the runway, adding, “The plane’s left landing gear leg caught fire upon landing. Preliminary reports suggest the brake wheels were destroyed.”

There have been no immediate reports of casualties.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Emergency Situations issued a statement saying that the plane had 136 passengers in addition to six crew members on board. This is while, the Interior Ministry's Transport Department put the total number of passengers and crew at 136.

In December 2012, at least four people were killed and four others wounded after a passenger jet overshot a runway at the same airport.
