Police: Boston bomber entombed undisclosed location after more than 100 cemeteries declined to take the body

Police say "a courageous and compassionate individual" came forward after more than 100 cemeteries declined to take the body.

The body of accused Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been entombed at an undisclosed location, police have said.

A statement from the Worcester, Massachusetts, police department said: "As a result of our public appeal for help, a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased.

"His body is no longer in the City of Worcester and is now entombed."

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body had been at a funeral home in Worcester for a week after more than 100 cemeteries refused to bury the 26-year-old.

Funeral director Peter Stefan said he could not find a community willing to take the body, including Cambridge, where the Tsarnaev family had lived for a decade.

On Wednesday, Worcester Police Chief Gary Gemme urged someone to take on the task, saying: "We are not barbarians. We bury the dead."

Police said it had cost tens of thousands of dollars to provide security at the funeral home.

An expert in US burial law said the resistance to Tsarnaev's burial was unprecedented in a country that has always found a way to put to rest its notorious killers, from Lee Harvey Oswald to Adam Lanza.

Tamerlan and his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are accused of planting two shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs near the marathon finish line on April 15, killing three people and injuring 260.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a getaway attempt after a gunbattle with police four days after the bombings.

Dzhokhar, 19, was later captured hiding in a tarp-covered boat outside a house in a Boston suburb. He is charged with using a weapon of mass destruction to kill.
