Boston Bombings Victim Heather Abbott released from hospital & Press Conference

Doctors say a Rhode Island woman who was severely injured in the Boston Marathon bombings a little over three weeks ago is making extraordinary recovery progress.

Shortly after she was injured, Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott held a press conference from the hospital to update the public on her condition. Still recovering from a surgery that removed part of her left leg, she needed to be pushed in and out of the room on a wheelchair.

On Friday, just two weeks later, Abbott held another press conference. This time, she walked herself in on crutches, donning a high-heeled stiletto on her right foot.

"She has been here less than three weeks," said Dr. David Crandell, Abbott's attending physician. "She has done remarkably well, and she will be discharged tomorrow."

Dr. Crandell said Abbott will continue with physical therapy over the next several weeks. Once her limb is fully healed -- doctors hope that will happen within 4-6 weeks -- she will begin the prosthetic phase of her recovery. A mold of her leg will be taken in order to create a custom lower leg prosthesis.

It is a long process with several challenges to overcome, but doctors believe Abbott will continue making progress.

"I am confident that she'll do very well and will be walking without crutches by the summer," said Dr. Crandell.

Abbott's outlook on Friday was similar to the one she showed two weeks ago. She said she was focused on her recovery and expressed gratitude for the support she has received. She also said she has not watched the news, and she tries not to think about the life-changing day.

"I decided that there's nothing I can do about it," said Abbott. "It's the situation I've been dealt. The best way to overcome it is to focus on recovery."

Abbott will officially check out of the hospital Saturday morning. She said she's looking forward to seeing all of her friends in Newport and -- most importantly -- sleeping in her own bed. But before she can head back to Rhode Island, she's making a stop at Fenway Park, where she will be the guest of honor at the Red Sox game.

She'll be tasked with throwing out the first pitch in front of thousands of fans, a daunting task with or without crutches.

But if her recovery so far is any indication, Abbott is up for the challenge.
