Kate Middleton and Prince William Harry Potter wand battle

The royal visitors were introduced to Harry Potter author JK Rowling ahead of viewing set-pieces from the movie series during the opening of the film facility in Leavesden.

The £100 million studios were the production home of all eight Harry Potter films, the James Bond movie Goldeneye starring Pierce Brosnan, the first of the Star Wars prequel films, and director Tim Burton's gothic horror Sleepy Hollow.

During a tour of the Harry Potter sets, the Duke and Duchess were given a lesson in how to cast spells with wands - then duelled against each other.

The Duke cast an "expelliarmus" jinx to disarm his his wife as nine children representing charities helped by the couple's foundation looked on.

While the couple duelled in the Griffindor Common room set, Prince Harry looked around The Burrow, home of the red-headed Weasley family.

Earlier the Duke was photographed sitting at the controls of the Batmobile and joked about fitting it with a baby seat for his child which is due this summer.

"To be honest, I'm over the moon just to have seen the real Batmobile and Batpod - Josh, Barry, you don't do baby seats for those cars, do you, by any chance?

"On the other hand, Harry's just excited to see a real-life talking owl in the Harry Potter studios. I haven't told him yet that Harry Potter is fictional, so please keep the secret for a little longer," he said.
