Australia : Wall collapse kills 1 man and 1 woman in Melbourne

A man and woman are confirmed dead and another woman suffered critical head injuries after a wall collapsed on them in a busy Melbourne street.

Witnesses said the collapse at Swanston Street in central Melbourne sounded like a thunderstorm, Nine News reported.

Photos from the scene show bystanders rushing to pull bricks and debris off three pedestrians who were buried when the wall fell.

"I just frantically ran across and started digging because I could see their head and half their torso out, so I was frantically taking the bricks off her," Martin Setka told AAP.

"The whole wall just gave way."

Jonathan Lian was sitting in a cafe opposite the building site when the wall collapsed, and came out to see people running towards the wall.

"It was really bad. It was like a war zone.

"There was dust everywhere and they were trying to dig people out. It was like chaos," he said.

The wall was reportedly part of a Grocon construction site in Carlton near RMIT University.

The injured woman was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital.
