Mexico: Priest wear robes with images of superheroes and uses a watergun to bless young people with holy water

A Mexican priest used a watergun to bless young people with holy water whilst wearing a robe covered in cartoons for mass.
Father Humberto Alvarez's uses unorthodox methods to reach out to churchgoers by spraying them with sacred water in the northern Mexican city of Saltillo.

He also sports fashionable robes with images of comic-book superheroes such as Superman and Batman on to entertain local children during Mass.

"Our manner of reaching them by using these characters sends a clear message. In this community, children are abundant. Children are a part of our life. These are neighbourhoods where children are important to us," Alvarez said in an interview.
Alvarez, who has been a priest for 14 years, said that he is trying to bring a smile to children's faces in Saltillo, which has been hard hit by organized crime and drug-related violence in the last several years.

"Aside from being a water pistol, for me it's a toy, because in our city the security situation is not very convenient. With this toy we can seek to break the protocol of mass, and we can do something to reach out to the children and get smiles and joy from children who have never played with water, never had fun with water, and never played with a water gun. With this gesture we involve them in the celebration," he said.
