Tina Turner : Goodbye America I'm Gonna Be a SWISS Citizen

William Tell may no longer be the most famous Swiss person in history ... 'cause Tina Turner says she's renouncing her U.S. citizenship to become a full-fledged citizen of Switzerland.

Turner -- who was born in Nutbush, Tennessee -- has been living in Zurich since the mid-90s ... and according to multiple reports, she's decided to make Switzerland her permanent home.

According to a local Swiss newspaper, officials in Switzerland have already decided to GRANT Turner's request for citizenship ... and now it's only a matter of time before the move becomes official.

We called Turner's rep for comment -- who told us she was still trying to get in touch with Tina to clarify the situation.

Also ... yeah, William Tell was Swiss. The more you know

Tina Turner, the Pop Legend, has announced that she will be giving up her U.S. Passport to officially become a citizen of Switzerland. Though the singer was born in the United States, she has been living in the town of Kuesnacht, Switzerland since 1995 when her partner, record executive, Erwin Bach was transferred there.

"I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here. ... I cannot imagine a better place to live," explained Turner to German language daily Blick.

Turner is awaiting the go ahead from the Canton of Zurich to become a full Swiss citizen. She has already passed her local civic test and interview so it shouldn't be long before she will be trading in her U.S. passport for her new citizenship. Adjö Tina!
