World's Longest Fingernails on ONE HAND: Man didn't cut them since 1952 and plans to donate to museum

A man who has the world's longest fingernails says he plans to cut them off and preserve them in a museum.

The 78-year-old Shridhar Chillal, from India, has been growing the nails on his left hand since he was at school. He has continued with the impressive feat despite admitting his super-long talons have made it difficult for him to find work and love.

Shridhar has now been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the person with the 'Longest Fingernails on a Single Hand Ever' and features in their 2016 edition.

Revealing why he decided to let his nails grow and grow, Shridhar said: 'When I was a schoolboy, we were once beaten badly by our teacher, because my friend broke his nail. The teacher had grown a very long nail.

'We asked him why he had beaten us so much for just breaking his nail. He said that we would not understand as we had never grown long nails.

'Unless we grew long nails we would never understand the kind of care required not to break them.'

After that, Shridhar 'took it as a challenge' and started growing his talons. His incredible nails now have a cumulative length of 909.6cm.

His thumb nail is the longest at two metres followed by his middle finger at 186.6cm, ring finger at 181.6cm, little finger at 179.1cm and index finger at 164.5cm.

But once his fingernails started growing beyond standard length, Shridhar's problems began.

'First our family members opposed, then teachers were opposed but I decided from that point on that I would never cut my nails again,' he said.

'Initially, difficulties appeared everywhere in my daily life. My family really didn't like it, no one would wash my clothes and I had to wash them by hand. Finding a job was also difficult, as no one was ready to employ me.'

He explained how trying to date women was also an issue.

'When I was to get married, no one was ready to marry me, I saw nearly 10 to 12 girls,' he said.

'If the girl agreed to marry, her parents would say I would strangle their daughter's neck and refuse. If the parents agreed, the girl would say she would not marry such a dirty person.'

He did, however, get married at the age 29 to his brother's sister-in-law.

Shridhar decided to grow the nails on his left hand only so he could continue with some of his hobbies. He enjoys photography and pursued it as a career for some time.

Now he plans to have his nails cut and have them preserved in a museum - but he's keeping the date of when this will happen a secret.

'I have been growing my nails since 1952 so it is now 62 years since I first started to let my nails grow,' he said.

'Now that I am 78 years old, my nails have become much more delicate due to my age, so my wish is to preserve these nails in a museum.'

On making it into the new Guinness World Records 2016 Edition, Shridhar said he felt like 'I had achieved the biggest goal in my life'.

He added: 'I can tell everyone now with pride about my record. When I am on my travels, people will recognise me as a Guinness World Records title holder.'
